This beautiful Greek city offers an ideal destination for an Easter getaway, boasting mild temperatures and a peaceful atmosphere, free from the bustling crowds that flood Athens annually.

If you’re seeking a holiday destination with rich history this Easter, but want to avoid the crowds that swarm Athens before the summer heat hits, look no further than this enchanting Greek city. Offering a peaceful atmosphere and stunning landmarks, it’s the perfect spot for exploring without the usual tourist hustle.

Thessaloniki, nestled in Central Macedonia on the western Chalcidice peninsula, sits at the head of a bay on the Gulf of Thermai. As Greece’s second-largest city, it is known as a cultural hub, famous for its lively festivals, events, and thriving arts scene. Built on the slopes of Mount Khortiátis, it offers breathtaking views of the Gallikós and Vardar rivers, making it one of Europe’s most picturesque locations.

Thessaloniki’s metropolitan area spans 562 square miles, encompassing a variety of beachside and hilly suburbs. The city’s most densely populated area, commonly referred to by locals as the “City of Thessaloniki,” is divided into three sections: north, central, and south.

While it’s difficult to choose the city’s top attractions, one standout is the White Tower, an iconic symbol of Thessaloniki. Built by the Ottomans in the 16th century, the tower has served multiple purposes over the years, including as a fortress, prison, and university workshop. Today, it is home to a museum.

To explore an even older landmark, head to the Arch of Galerius (also known as Kamara), built in 306 AD to honor Roman general Galerius’s triumph over the Persians. The arch is adorned with intricate carvings that depict scenes of this victory, which is linked to the nearby Palace of Galerius and the Rotonda. This remarkable cylindrical structure features stunning mosaics and an impressive minaret, making it a must-see historical site.

The striking Church of Saint Paul the Apostle, perched on a hillside, is a sight you won’t easily overlook. Thessaloniki holds historical significance as one of the first stops on the Apostle Paul’s journey to Greece, following a vision in which he was called by a man from Macedonia. In 49 AD, Thessaloniki became known as the “Golden Gate” to Europe, marking its importance in the spread of Christianity.

Thessaloniki hosts major events annually, such as the Thessaloniki International Fair and the Thessaloniki International Film Festival. In 2014, the city was named the European Youth Capital, highlighting its broad appeal to diverse audiences.

April in Thessaloniki brings mild temperatures, averaging around 20°C during the day. As summer approaches, the warmth gradually increases, making Easter the ideal time to explore the city before the heat intensifies.

Unlike Athens, which draws massive crowds to its iconic sites—six million visitors last year—Thessaloniki remains more peaceful, with only 1.5 million visitors, allowing for a more relaxed experience.

Thessaloniki is accessible through Macedonia International Airport (SKG), which handles both international and domestic flights. This makes it easy to add Thessaloniki to your travel itinerary, including visits to other Greek destinations such as the island of Thassos. EasyJet currently offers direct flights from Gatwick Airport to Thessaloniki in April, with return tickets starting at just £142.
